Meghan Johnston, DVM, CCRP

“No animal should ever jump on the dining room furniture unless absolutely certain that he can hold his own in the conversation.”- Fran Lebowitz

Dr. Johnston has been with Hunt Valley Animal Hospital since August 2003 after completing a one year small animal medicine and surgery internship at the Regional Veterinary Referral Center in Springfield, VA. Dr. Johnston graduated from Lehigh University in 1995 with a degree in Biology and from Towson State University in 2000 with a Master’s Degree in Biology. She then went on to receive her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island in Canada in 2002. In 2005, Dr. Johnston completed two separate training courses on ultrasound procedures and diagnostics in Florida and Washington D.C. In 2006, Dr Johnston completed an intense training course for laparoscopic surgical procedures, rhinoscopy and cystoscopy at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. She has also learned the advanced techniques for repair of elongated soft palates in brachycephalic breeds. Dr. Johnston has a special interest in surgery and cardiology. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Maryland Veterinary Medical Association, and our Medical Director.

Dr. Johnston shares her home with her husband, Reuben, daughters, Clara and Vivien, and three dogs Millie, Murphy and Asher, rescues from a Canadian Humane Society and local Defenders of Animal Rights, respectively. Murphy is a retired Pets On Wheels therapy dog. Two cats are also part of the clan, a 3-legged rescue named Gustafur and a tuxedo cat named Taz. In her free time away from the hospital, Dr. Johnston enjoys cycling, golf, rock climbing, hiking with her dogs, running, swing dancing and her monthly black tie dinners as a member of the Baltimore Dinner Club.

Dr. Johnston is also an avid sports fan and can be seen and heard all winter cheering for the Ravens! However, on her artistic side, she dreams of being on a Broadway stage someday…

I’d/I/I’ll: I’d rather be in Bermuda or Colorado / I LOVE the Baltimore Ravens / I’ll be on Broadway one day 😉

My First Pet: Bert aka Bertram Francis aka Schmerto – my first baby, my first love, my best friend – miss him everyday

Favorite Guilty Pleasure Song: Any Broadway Tune

In my spare time I can be found: Watching my beautiful girls grow-up, enjoying time with my husband and dogs, cleaning the house…

Current Pets:

  • Mille – Rottweiler
  • Ivy – Rottweiler
  • Chewbacca– Cat
Heather

Heather, RVT, CCRP

Heather came to the veterinary field, after completing a Bachelor's at the University of Rhode Island and a Post-Baccalaureate Program at Brown University in Classics. She's worked for rescues, shelters and animal hospitals, and has been working with animals for over 10 years. She became a Registered Veterinary Technician in 2021 and a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner in early 2023. She credits her pursuit of veterinary medicine to her dog Mango, who is little and feisty; having that experience firsthand makes her feel extra bonded to her patients who show a little sass and who need a little extra patience! She always knew she wanted to specialize in something once she was licensed, and the combination of biology and mechanics that rehabilitation encapsulates really spoke to her. One of her favorite parts of rehab sessions is finding what most motivates her patients, so she can make their recovery process enjoyable!

I’d/I/I’ll: I’d have a German Shepherd if we had the space for one! For now I’m just fawning over every one that comes into the hospital / I am really passionate about learning and am currently diving into the world of veterinary rehabilitation, massage, and pain management! / I’ll talk about my dog Mango for hours if no one stops me!

My First Pet: A big fluffy orange cat named Horatio, who I loved with all my heart, a lovable Husky named Natasha, and a beta fish named Fluffy who I thought lived for 9 years but it turns out my mom just kept replacing him and not telling me.

Favorite Guilty Pleasure Song: Listen To Your Heart by Roxette (and all subsequent remixes)- my cousin and I started a weird tradition of texting the lyrics to each other whenever we hear it, no matter where we are or what time it is, and it makes me laugh every time I send it to him, or open my phone to a text from him that just says “LISTEN TO YOUR HEARTTTTT!

In my spare time I can be found: Reading, spending time with my boyfriend Luke and with our families in Rhode Island and upstate New York whenever we can, hiking, eating (a constant activity for me), and of course- hanging out with my constant companion Mango

Current Pets:

  • Mango – Terrier Mix, although to be honest I’m not always sure he’s really even a dog, maybe some kind of fox-chupacabra hybrid. His DNA test says he’s 5% German Shepherd though!
  • Kingsley – 100% Rag Doll/100% weirdo
